Jackson Barracks was established in 1834 and housed the Federal garrison in the city having seen service in times of conflict including the Mexican War, the Civil War, and both World War I and II. The Barracks today serve as the headquarters to the Louisiana National Guard and prior to Hurricane Katrina, most federal disaster response resources of the Greater New Orleans Area were staged at the Barracks. Due to severe flood damage, a rebuilding effort of the buildings and campus is taking place. The Post Headquarters building is to be the initial destination for all who enter the base. Billeting Services, Morale Welfare & Recreation, Military Police, and Financial and Personnel offices are all part of the program to be included. The Post Headquarters design respects the surrounding buildings and historical campus.
