Julius Freyhan Building Receives 2026 Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation Stewardship Award

The Julius Freyhan Building has been recognized with the 2026 Stewardship Award from the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation, honoring exemplary historic preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, and reconstruction projects that adhere to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.

Originally constructed as the Julius Freyhan School, the building has been thoughtfully restored and transformed into a museum, cultural center, and conference center. The project preserves the building’s historic character while creating a vibrant destination that continues to serve the community in new and meaningful ways.

The Stewardship Award celebrates projects that demonstrate excellence in preserving Louisiana’s architectural heritage while ensuring historic buildings remain relevant and functional for future generations. The recognition highlights the value of thoughtful preservation and adaptive reuse in strengthening communities and extending the life of significant historic landmarks.

Holly & Smith Architects was honored to work alongside the Freyhan Foundation and the project team to help bring new life to this important landmark. Through careful restoration and rehabilitation, the project balances respect for the building’s historic fabric with a renewed purpose, ensuring its legacy will continue for years to come. We are grateful to the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation for this recognition and congratulate the Freyhan Foundation and everyone involved in making this project a success.
